A man was arrested after dropping what police suspected was a gun during a chase on a terraced street.

Merseyside Police said the suspect ran from officers on Bigham Road in Fairfield, Liverpool, shortly before 18:00 BST.

The road was cordoned off at both ends while the weapon was examined by forensics experts.

The suspect was arrested nearby, and the weapon was found to be an imitation firearm.

'Huge amount of fear'

The weapon was visible lying on the road surface near the junction with Romer Road.

The force said a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm and possessing cannabis.

Det Insp Darren Taylor said: "To the untrained eye, imitation firearms can look like real firearms and are capable of causing a huge amount of fear and harm, so the fact another has now been removed is to be welcomed."
