Two people were taken to hospital after three were rescued from a river in Lancashire.

Two men and one woman were spotted in difficulty in the River Irwell in Bacup at about 20:10 BST on Monday

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the three were pulled from the water and two were taken to hospital.

Crews from across the wider area, including air support, were called in, the service said.

"Two fire engines from Bury and Broughton fire stations, one fire engine and the water incident unit from Heywood fire station, the technical response unit from Ashton fire station and the air support unit were called," a statement said.

鈥淐rews arrived quickly and used specialist water rescue equipment including a short extension ladder.

"Crews were in attendance for roughly one hour.鈥
