A man has been arrested after a car "packed full" of cannabis plants was stopped by police in Nottinghamshire.

Officers made the discovery after responding to reports of a burglary at a house in Ryecroft Street, in Stapleford, at 02:40 BST on Tuesday.

The front door of the house was open, and large quantities of cannabis were found growing across multiple rooms.

The car was stopped on the M1 near Chesterfield shortly after.

Nottinghamshire Police said about 100 cropped cannabis plants were found packed into bags at the back of the car, along with two axes.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis, burglary, and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

Insp Mike Ebbins said: 鈥淎fter attending reports of a burglary, it quickly became apparent that the property was being used to grow cannabis and that some of these plants had been taken."
