Two women died after the car they were travelling in hit another one travelling in a different direction, a coroner has been told.

An Audi travelling south on the A4050 collided with the Nissan Micra that Beverly Pugsley, 69, and Madeline Brooks, 85, were travelling in, which was heading north.

The crash happened just after 13:30 GMT on 2 November on the Port Road at Wenvoe, Vale of Glamorgan, Pontypridd coroner's court heard.

Ms Pugsley, from Llandaff, Cardiff, was the driver of the Nissan and Ms Brooks, from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, was a rear seat passenger in the same car.

Post-mortem examinations carried out at the University Hospital Wales in Cardiff found that both women died as a result of blunt injuries to the neck and chest.

Coroner Rachel Knight said it was necessary to open inquests as she had reason to suspect the deaths were 鈥渦nnatural鈥.

The inquests were adjourned pending the outcome of criminal investigations by police.

She said the position would be reviewed in about six months depending on the progress of the police investigation.

Ms Knight expressed her condolences to the families of Ms Pugsley and Ms Brooks.
