Serving soldier charged over cyclist's crash death

A serving soldier has been charged with causing the death of a cyclist by dangerous driving.
Sophie Waugh, 31, appeared at York Magistrates' Court earlier in connection with the death of Ian Morris.
Mr Morris, 71, died when he was struck by a Ford Focus as he cycled along the A6055 near Thirsk on 28 June 2023.
The court was told that Ms Waugh serves with the Royal Logistics Corps of the British Army and is pregnant.
The defendant, of Longleat Gardens, South Shields, did not enter a plea and was given unconditional bail
She will next appear at Teesside Crown Court on 8 November.
Mr Morris's family described him as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
They added in a tribute released by North Yorkshire Police: "He was a well-known and loved member of the Bedale area who loved both his golfing and cycling."
