Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar said he was "shocked" to hear about the gun attack.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Varadkar said the restaurant is one he has visited many times.

Irish justice minister Helen McEntee has condemned the shooting, saying that "this viciousness has resulted in unimaginable human suffering this Christmas."

"That anyone could perpetrate such violence as families gathered together is especially disgusting," she added.
