The Llangollen is one of Britain's most picturesque canals.

At 46 miles long, it winds its way from the foothills of Snowdonia through Shropshire into Cheshire's low-lying farmland.

Along its route look out for some fantastic spring wildlife.

Key attractions:

Narrow boating - if you'd like to follow in Mike Dilger's footsteps, there are several companies that hire narrow boats along this route. Alternatively you can walk to the wildlife along the picturesque towpaths.

Whixall Moss forms part of the Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve four miles south west of Whitchurch.

Circular walks along Colemere and the Ellesmere Canal towpath.

Essential kit:

Binoculars for bird watching. Walking shoes.

Nature watching:

Bird watching. Dragonflies and spiders.

Access:Varies depending on area but some towpaths are even and paved.
Getting there:

Llangollen Canal - the nearest towns are Llangollen in the south and Nantwich in the north. The aqueduct is located near Cefn-Mawr.

Colemere is located three miles south-east of Ellesmere.

Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve is four miles south west of Whitchurch and 10 miles south west of Wrexham.

Blake Mere - Kingfisher site on the canal bank and a beautiful spot. The mere is right next to the canal.

Wood Lane Reserve - ½ mile walk down country lane from the canal near Ellesmere Port.

Roadside parking at entrances to Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve. Larger car park at Manor House. Parking at Colemere.

Year round.

Charges:Colemere, Woodland and The Mosses are all free to enter throughout the year.
