Red Deer on the road

Always at the forefront of all things new and folk-tinged in Manchester, the Red Deer Club is once again getting ready to spread their wings and take their treats around the UK, taking both local wonders and international tunesters with them.

Red Deer supremo Dunk Le Chunk says that the shows will be "the usual ramshackle performance that you get at the Club, pasted together with gaffer tape, love and plenty of care."

The new tour follows the same sort of pattern as the one they did back in July 2007, mixing live artists with Dunk’s big box of vinyl treats. It’s a formula that he says has set as a bit of "a master plan to take over the world in our own unique way – it’s just taking time for people to realise that!"

This time round, there’s a trio of acts on offer - the local talent of brilliant songstress Liz Green and the ethereal George Thomas (both of whom Dunk says are on "on such fine form at the moment"), and Sam Amidon, a New Yorker with a propensity for beautiful tunes and raucous shows who Dunk has been keen to bring along on the Red Deer bus ever since he first heard him.

"I heard Sam’s debut album 'The Chicken Proved False Hearted' back in January 2007. It was a dark, dreary day in a city centre office and it blew me away – he’s got such a unique voice.

"He played a handful of shows last summer, only about three of them in the UK, so now we’ve decided to bring him along for the ride, because people need to hear Sam.

"I’ve heard he’s a bit of a performer, throwing himself around the room, and giving it his fullest. I’m looking forward to it, it should be the best thing we’ve done… ever!"

Find out for yourself if Dunk is right when the Red Deer tour pops into Manchester for a show at the Cross Street Chapel on Friday 29 February. Tickets are £6.
