As 2007 comes to an end, we look at the growing number of TV programmes shot in the city. And find out why it's boom time for filming in Manchester: Ever since the very first episode of Coronation Street in 1960, programme makers have been looking to use Manchester as a filming location. David Threlfall in Shameless Over the years, the city has provided the backdrop to some of the nation's best loved TV dramas and comedies such as Cold Feet (C4), Cracker (ITV1), Queer As Folk (C4), Clocking Off (91Èȱ¬ One) and Life on Mars (91Èȱ¬ Three). And that tradition continued in 2007 with Manchester producing some of the most popular TV programmes of the year such as Shameless (C4), Waterloo Road (91Èȱ¬ One), Blue Murder (ITV1) and Drop Dead Gorgeous (91Èȱ¬ Three).Ìý Ed Pugh is from North West Vision & Media which supports and promotes filming in Manchester. He says the industry is growing here because of the presence of the 91Èȱ¬ and Granada and the raft of independent production companies:
Help playing audio/video On location in Manchester 2007:Drop Dead Gorgeous (91Èȱ¬ Three) Shameless (C4)Manchester’s chav version of the Waltons is set on the fictional Chatsworth Estate and features our favourite dysfunctional family, the Gallaghers. Originally filmed on a real housing estate in West Gorton it's now shot on a purpose-built three acre set near Wythenshawe Hospital. Filming of the fifth series has finished, and the first of 16 episodes of a new extended Shameless is scheduled for New Year's Day 2008. Waterloo Road (91Èȱ¬ One)Waterloo Road is set in the chaotic world of a failing northern comprehensive school.Ìý When the current Headmaster has a nervous breakdown, Jack Rimmer (Jason Merrells) is thrown into the hot seat. Now in its third series, the programme is made by Shed Productions for 91Èȱ¬ One. Twenty episodes were filmed on location in Rochdale in 2007. Drop Dead Gorgeous (91Èȱ¬ Three)Gritty northern drama which follows Runcorn schoolgirl Ashley Webb (Sinead Moynihan) and her family as she is catapulted into the glamorous world of modelling. Drop Dead Gorgeous is filmed in different locations across Manchester - including the Pie Factory in Salford which has been turned into a production site. Made by Hat Trick production, the programme has completed two series with more planned. The Street (91Èȱ¬ One) New Street Law (91Èȱ¬ One)Set amongst Manchester's legal community, New Street Law follows the exploits and cases of two rival barristers' chambers with very different attitudes to justice. Jack Roper (John Hannah), has thrown his working life into turmoil after his single-minded pursuit of the truth has left him facing a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Blue Murder (ITV1)Caroline Quentin reprises her lead role as DCI Janine Lewis, Manchester’s first female Detective Chief Inspector and a single mother of four children who juggles the demands of family life with her high-profile job. Three new 90-minute episodes star ex-Corrie star Kate Ford and multi-talented actress Jill Halfpenny. The Street (91Èȱ¬ One)Jimmy McGovern’s emotionally powerful drama features six stand-alone episodes about characters who happen to live in the same street in Manchester. The second series was shot on location in and around Manchester in the summer of 2007. The Visit (91Èȱ¬ Three) The Visit (91Èȱ¬ Three)The Visit, written by stand-up comedian Tony Burgess and set entirely in the visiting room of HMP Radford Hill – a category C prison. Stray sheep, dodgy drug deals, prostitutes with amazing foot dexterity and snatched conjugal rights are common occurrences as the inmates are reunited with loved ones and some suspicious business associates for the all-too-short weekly visit. First shown in July 2007. Boy A (C4)Fictional story about Jack (Andrew Garfield), a young man who spent most of his life in institutions paying for a terrible crime he committed as a minor and is then released back into an adult world with a new identity. This one-off coming of age dramaÌýwas shown in November 2007.Ìý Poppy Shakespeare (C4)TV adaptation of the debut novel by Clare Allan about life in a psychiatric hospital day ward. Filming has been completed in Manchester this year and the one-off drama is lined up for Channel 4’s spring schedule.
