Now in its seventh year, the production arrives in Manchester boasting fantastic reviews from across the globe and last night, as it exploded on to the stage of the Palace Theatre, it was not difficult to understand why the public have taken it to their hearts. Sexy: Latin rhythms The rhythm and beat kicked in from the start and the pace never dropped. This song and dance extravaganza showcasing the native music of Cuba soon introduces us to ‘Lady Salsa’ otherwise known as Trinidad Rolando Portocarrero.Ìý Trinidad’s appeal and vivacity are matched only by her keenness to namedrop Carmen Miranda, Nat King Cole and Che Guevara into her recollections of friends and acquaintances. Puffing on a large cigar, she embraces the audience with her story, the people she has met, the places she has visited, and the music and influences that shaped her country. Sadly, on occasions the narrative becomes lost during the action. The constant sound of drums and keyboard in the background make it difficult to hear all the dialogue and the sight and smell of Trinidad cigars and that of her co-hosts were accompanied by whispers of "haven't they heard of the smoking ban?" FunkyThis is not a traditional piece of musical theatre, and it does help if you are familiar with the salsa scene. But any disappointment is soon cast aside as the music and dance suddenly grips you and you sit back and enjoy the ride. And oh what a ride! A cast of around a dozen sizzling and technically gifted dancers perform The Rumba, mambo and cha cha cha supported by three singers, who can also dance.
They all perform in front of a funky live band that can only be described as musical Viagra. The musicians keep going all night and play to the highest standard. Along with the sex appeal this show also gives you the feelgood factor. In the second half a few members of the audience are invited on stage to try out a few routines and the finale has everyone on their feet trying out some dance moves. As the curtain closes the ensemble are still dancing and everyone leaves the theatre feeling happy – with many people no doubt trying out a few of those Salsa shakes in front of the mirror at home.
