Making a winning NOISE

NOISE is a virtual platform for young artists, musicians and designers to get their work noticed and get a step up into their industry, and that’s exactly what Rhythm n Grime have done by winning the NOISEfestival.com Urban Songwriter Competition.

NOISE

NOISE is a national cross media showcase of creative talent, for those aged 25 and under, aimed at showcasing talent and promoting creativity across a series of media platforms on television, radio, online and print

We caught up with RnG’s Meistro, known to his friends as Wayne Welbeck, about taking the urban crown and what exactly rhythm and grime is.

What made you get involved with Noise Festival?

"We actually run a radio show on Unity Radio and promotions, competition info and the like regularly gets sent through to the station for us to promote to others. Sometimes, we may look into these ourselves, if they interest us, and the NOISE Festival happened to be one of these."

When you entered the competition, what did you think your chances were of winning?

"Every opportunity is an opportunity, and within Rhythm n Grime, we feel we have enough talent and appeal to cause an effect on anything, or anyone, we encounter.

"We create a platform to push forward positive music to people like us to contrast with other music around them that depicts negativity."
Meistro on the message in their music

"That doesn’t mean winning competitions, it means getting our music across to a degree that it makes someone notice, and recognise us. That may result in us ‘getting through’ to the next stage of a competition, or just in someone on the receiving end of our music generally liking it and taking home a message from it."

How did you feel when you won?

"Getting selected to perform at the final was a big enough achievement and we were on a high from that, so when we won, we were already in the motions of feeling good. We were pleased with our performance that day, and had the ease of knowledge that we did our best, whether or not we won the competition. We were just happy to be there and to reciprocate the reception we got."

Your music is R'n'G - what does it sound like?

"Fundamentally, Rhythm n Grime is a blend of R’n’B and Garage – but there are many influences that are existent in our music. Pyper, our producer, is a classically trained musician – playing the violin from an early age and achieving a grade seven – so the beats he produces all have that influence, usually in the form of ‘string melodies’. Some might say, he makes ‘classical grime’.

"Ideal implicates much of his Christian upbringing into his style, evoking a ‘gospel feel’ to his voice and general orientation – creating that distinctive tinge to the tone of his delivery.

"I am a lover of soul music and involve my emotions, feelings and soul in any writing I do. This allows me to create very real, engaging lyrics that are relative to any situation I chooses, and therefore allows the listeners to really identify with the message.

"We all grew up in different areas of urban Manchester and all have our own experiences relating to our childhoods, through to our lives today. This allows us to bring the grime aspect to our music, as that is the sound of youths today in similar situations. By fusing all of these different dimensions of music together, we create a platform to push forward positive music to people like us to contrast with other music around them that depicts negativity."

What's next for you musically?

"We are all studying in University at the moment in Leeds and Liverpool, so I guess we are just trying to build up a catalogue of music while pushing it further afield than we previously have, so we can expand our credibility across the UK.

"Hopefully in the future, we will be able to release music on a nationwide basis and be recognised and respected for our music. Watch out for exclusive styles of music we are preparing to drop – Gospel Grime, Urban Soul and general feel-good Mood Music. This is a truly exciting time for us."
