Pete Doherty at Zumeba - 0/10

Paul Benham (gig: 20/03/06)
The hype surrounding Pete Doherty's spur-of-the moment acoustic set at Zumeba was immense. Standing in the queue, surrounded by a couple of hundred adoring fans, I felt like I was about to witness something special.

Yeah, I knew he'd turn up late and yeah, he'd probably be a tad worse for wear but this is Pete Doherty - one of music's greatest poets playing an intimate acoustic set. Even when it got to after midnight, there was still excitement and deep anticipation of what we were going to bear witness to.

So imagine the horror when he turned up just before 12:30am, demanding to do a DJ set before performing. Now I'm a pretty avid Pete fan, but even I draw the line at being told by a member of staff that "If we give Pete any 'bother', he will leave the stage immediately".

I bit my lip, stood through the DJ set (where Pete just picked random records and handed them to the resident) and prepared myself for the magic!

His acoustic session began with him sitting on a chair, guitar in hand, in total silence with the crowd starting to get a wee bit impatient - over two and a half hours late is pushing it, even in Doherty鈥檚 world.

He opened with a rendition of Can't Stand Me Now that confirmed we should have stayed at home. The guitar sounded like he either had strings missing or had bought it from a toy shop en route, while the vocals left the diminutive girls in front of me wondering whether it was Pete actually singing.

He moved onto a couple of tracks that were beyond recognition, before finishing with a single verse of **** Forever and leaving the stage in a shroud of incomprehensible cheers.

In short his performance was abysmal, lacking passion, professionalism and, most of all, talent. I was left feeling cheated by this individual who promises so much yet consistently fails to deliver.

Leaving, there was simple air of bemusement to the whole spectacle. On the way into the gig, we鈥檇 been inundated with rumours of Mike Tyson turning up with Pete. Truth be told, you had to wish he had. He鈥檇 have probably done a better job than the artist formerly known as Pete Doherty.
