Imagine them as Sigur Ros’ younger siblings; capturing the same spacious, shimmering beauty, yet rebelling at the same time, throwing spiky riffs and glittering pop hooks in at the same time. Add to this, scenes spilling from an Aphex Twin induced nightmare projected onto a giant backdrop and you’re almost there. From the opener Special, which saw drummer Silas Graae’s kickdrum intro beating out to bring on each member in turn, completed with singer Jonas Bjerre adding his ethereal vocals. Each song in turn brought new wonders to behold, backed by a stage show that needs to be seen to be understood, sweeping as it did from the 15 foot cats in soldier uniforms playing the violin or the sinister looking boys flanked by animal headed backing singers. The night was closed, there really as no other way, with Comforting Sounds. Clocking in at just under nine minutes, the ability to maintain such a level of epic beauty and hold the audience’s attention with such ease is a testament to the sheer brilliance of this band. Mew truly are a critic’s nightmare and a fan’s dream. Just experience them for yourself. This was simply a show like no other I have ever seen and a truly wonderful live event. |
