Is this the hardest working band we have before us or a bunch of guys intent on avoiding Council Tax? Propelling themselves into the set, the band kept things moving nicely with tracks from their most recent album and a few from their superior preceding ones. At this point I should be using hyperbolic phrases like ‘the Doves began dropping incendiary tracks into the audience and the set went off like a bombing raid’; instead despite highlights there were some unexpected and disappointing lows.

Losing the plot after a ‘Last Broadcast’ dedicated to George Best, the crowd were crying out for more, however rather than seizing the opportunity as we chanted back, the band were at sea and we were left bemused. Predictably we were left on a high with crowd favourite, the rousing anthem There Goes the Fear. Let’s face it this would have roused a hibernating arctic monkey from its seasonal rest! But ultimately this gig was disappointing. Yes, boys feel the fear - and do it anyway - do crowd banter, belt out your tunes, be brash and come back with confidence. Better that than appearing half hearted, knackered and like you all need is a bloody good holiday. Oh, and hey, don’t forget to write some new material in the Maldives, we’re all gagging for more! |
