And yet, without exception, every man, woman and child is here to worship at the altar of Mac. Hardly surprising, as The Bunnymen are in imperious form tonight.听 Will Sergeant鈥檚 guitar is as powerful as ever, creating soundscapes worthy of any grandmaster. And McCulloch鈥檚 voice seems only to get better with age. Although, you have to wonder how any government plans to ban smoking in public places would affect the Bunnymen sound or reflect on future tour schedules as Mac nonchalantly draws on his trademark cigarette.听 The new material stands up well against the tried, tested and loved tonight. Yet, it鈥檚 fair to say that it wouldn鈥檛 have taken a mystic to predict that the back catalogue would steal the show. Bring OnThe Dancing Horses, Killing Moon, Back Of Love and The Cutter are all present and correct, and played with the passion of songs written just yesterday. Without question this is the best band to back the original pairing for some time.听 Lips Like Sugar soars, All That Jazz is anything but, and Over The Wall kicks you whilst you鈥檙e down. Forget Coldplay and Keane, even Franz Ferdinand. The Bunnymen are still the definition of consummate cool. Only McCulloch can insert Lou Reeds鈥 best with the tag line, 鈥淭ake a walk on the Merseyside鈥 and get away with it. Two encores later, and the show closes with the sublime Ocean Rain. The hairs on the back of my neck resume their normal position and we exit into a starry sky, Heaven (is certainly) Up Here. I owe somebody a big drink for this one. |
