| The Divine Brown |
The Divine Brown, though based in London, are relatively unknown over here, yet have just got back from a tour of America that rocked harder than a mountain side. It鈥檚 an indication of the fact that their last show before this was in Detroit. The basement style and filthy chic of the Retro Bar suited their self-styled Dirty Gospel down to the ground. A bigger venue, while it is more than deserved, would seem wrong somehow. A band that creates such a full-throttle sound need to be close to their congregation. Combining a slick sense of style (straw cowboy hats, slicked hair and dangling cigarettes abound) with tunes born out a barroom brawl between Rocket From The Crypt and Therapy?, The Divine Brown delivered a belting set, topped off with some of the finest rock and roll posturing you鈥檒l see this side of Keith Richards. The thousands that chose the Stereophonics up the road might not have all fitted into the tiny confines of this venue, but they鈥檇 have got a better slice of rock and roll if they had tried. For once, America is a step ahead in their musical tastes. It鈥檚 not something we should let them get away with for too long. |
