Every Time I Die at Academy 3 - 9/10

Alex Davies (gig: 11/08/05)
Buffalo’s Every Time I Die finally hit the UK this month, satisfying fans who had been waiting rabidly ever since the excellent Hot Damn! was released in 2003.

With little promotion, and the tour falling awkwardly between the end of promotion for Hot Damn and the beginnings of the push for new album Gutter Phenomenon, the Academy 3 was disappointingly not sold out, however, it was busy nonetheless, and this did not take anything away from the night.

Every Time I Die make music for the ADD generation, their songs thrust out at blistering pace, constantly changing style, never giving you chance to compose yourself, and all delivered with pure energy.

The band work the stage, and move with fury and passion, the drummer keeping a lighting pace throughout the entire set. It is hard enough for a band to give a good stage show on such a small stage, yet this is made even more difficult by a constant barrage of crowd members hurling themselves onstage, then diving back into the crowd.

The band took this in good spirits, but frankly, for any sane people in the audience, this constant interruption of stage dynamics meant the band never got to perform fluidly, as they were constantly trying to avoid people diving towards them. As fun as it may be, the sooner the Academy’s impose a ban on crowd surfing the better.

That aside, tonight’s set was perfect. The band played practically everything you’d want to hear off Hot Damn, the highlight being a close to perfect rendition of Ebolorama and mixed it up with old classics and new tracks. Finishing the night off with the visceral Floater, and a shared, impassioned chant of ‘drag the lake, you’ll find it’s full of love’, the band were done. No encores, no messing, definitely worth the wait.

In case you were too far away from the band, can I remind you that between songs they were telling members of the audience to get up on stage and crowdsurf. They also made a comment on how boring the people were that were stood around doing nothing, i.e. the "sane people in the audience". I was one of the people disrupting your show that was oh-so-nearly perfect apart from those people enjoying themselves at the front.
