The Subways at Academy 3 - 4/10

Steven Long (gig: 11/07/05)
Three teenagers from Welwyn Garden City, with a big bunch of tunes and a stage dynamic to die for, rocked the sauna-like Academy 3 and sent most of the punters home hot and happy.

But there鈥檚 always one that spoils the party. No surprises for guessing who - it鈥檚 me I鈥檓 afraid. Why? Well, it鈥檚 difficult to say, because The Subways had bags of passion and, in Billy Lunn and Charlotte Cooper, a couple of hugely engaging front-people who played and sang with passion and energy.

But scratch a little deeper and what have you got? Certainly not the new Nirvana or Jam as there is a singular lack of angst, anger or political drive.

Rock and Roll Queen, the new single, is a case in point, yep it鈥檚 a great tune, but the sentiments could be straight out of a Fame Academy primer; it鈥檚 just a big dumb pop song dressed in punk rock finery, and that鈥檚 a big worry.

Maybe this isn鈥檛 a worry for The Subways who could want to be the new Ash, or even worse the new McFly. Rock like this makes corporate big bucks and it鈥檚 possible it鈥檚 all that Britain鈥檚 musical teenagers are aiming for these days, but that鈥檚 a real shame because The Subways have the tunes and spark to be way more important than that. Here鈥檚 hoping.

When you re iew gigs aren't you meant to review the gigs? Not yabber on about Nirvana and McFly, you could have done that years ago when they were a new band who you could have compared to who the hell mr Steven wanted

ellie
i would say "what are you on mate, that gig was amazing?!" but then again i dont really have to bother. all the subways' fans loved the gig, we all love the music and if one person doesnt then its their problem really. at least us lot that actually enjoy the band and their music had a good time...

laura
whats wrong with ash?

Oddly enough, a previous reviewer gave the Subways 6/10 at their last Manchester gig (whereupon the set only lasted for 20 minutes because of technical difficulties). Billy, understandably angered, stormed off stage - probably ridden with the 'angst' Steven Long craves so much. Perhaps next time, a 5 minute set, abusing the crowd and trashing the venue might earn them a 10/10 from a 91热爆 reviewer. Now that's Rock'n'Roll.

This was the best gig i have ever been to for the intimacy and great performance. I have been to see u2, red hot chili peppers, muse and others but in my opinion this beat them all. I much prefer small gigs like this to grand gigs like u2 etc, and i will DEFINATELY be seeing them again in their next tour. Steven talks utter rubbish - this band are amazin

"it鈥檚 just a big dumb pop song dressed in punk rock finery" What exactly, is wrong with that?

Its what the mans paid for!! He wouldnt be good at reviewing if he said he liked everything. I agree and think they lack that certain something. But the world would be boring if we liked the same thing.

Matt
Couldn't disagree more. I'mn a journalist and recently reviewed the album with top marks- they show more flair, style, originality and capability than most other new bands. They're fresh, young and full of energy. stop moaning and enjoy the party!

punkymoose
having politcal drive is good in a band, but it can also lead to its downfall, as what happened with a great rock band Kinesis. In the end, their political beliefs got them ruined by record companies. The Subways play and sing about things to keep you uplifted, if thats a bad thing then i guess we should just sit around and look gloomy. Long Live The Subways!

RosieFG
The Subways want to be the new McFly?!? hmm me thinks you've got your wires crossed mate... People can get bored of the politcally charge crap, i.e Green Day, and want music to be music, something that fills their body and makes them want to dance. The best music is the kind that doesn't make you think, its the kind that makes you feel with every fibre of your body - and The Subways do this!

pipo
since when do they have to be all political and have to talk about those sorts of things? every now and again the general music loving public want fun songs they can dance around in a crazed manner to, and this band certainly deliver. so shove your pathetic review up somewhere where the sun don't shine:)

Rick
I think I remember seeing you at the gig. Were you the guy stood at the back with his head up his own arse for the entire set!!!

Graham
Surely you're missing the point Steven? Every band has to be as angst ridden as Nirvana? Every band has to be full of anger in order to be 'good'? I don't think so. Comparing The Subways to McFly is astonishing. What I saw on Monday night is an extremely exciting new British band who are surely going to be big in the near future. Just enjoy good music when it comes along and stop being such a boring old git.

Si Williams
Ridiculous review - there is a "singular lack of angst, anger or political drive" because that is not what The Subways are about - listen to the songs, they are about love, fun, etc. - what the hell did you expect? Do you even know this band?? Its such a shame you need politics and hate in your music to accept it as being non-corporate - you even admit they have the tunes, so why does it being about love and not hate make it so worthy of a crap review? Stephen Long, overcome your personal taste and opinion and take an objective look at the gig next time - you never know, you might even enjoy it.

Dook
They're a good band, but they're only trying to rip off the people before them... they succeed, they make pretty good music, but it has no depth... but nobody's asking depth from 18 year olds are they?

Grogan
They were alright but no where near as good as Marlin

Ross Newbigging
Does this guy have a clue?? i went watching the subways on the same night and they were quality! has to be one of the best gigs ive been to, who cares if lacks political drive, they are producing quality tunes. if you the guy taking the pictures at the front you were ruining for everyone, by getting in the way!

lauren
they were amazing. they only played a short set again, but it was about 45 minutes this time and they only have one album's worth of short songs, so i feel it was justified. but they seemed really awestruck that we knew their lyrics. the look on charlotte's face was amaing and i loved every minute of it!
