Rob Thomas

Rob Thomas at the Academy - 10/10

Alex Davies (gig: 20/06/05)
A diverse range of people packed into the Academy for Rob Thomas’ first solo UK show. From fans of Thomas’ full time band Matchbox 20 who are massively popular Stateside, to those there on the basis of new single Lonely No More, it was a healthy mix.

Lisa Miskovsky
Lisa Miskovsky

Entering a bare stage, with huge sheets covering Thomas’ bands impressive set-up, Radio 2 favourite Lisa Miskovsky plucked a few chords on her guitar and began to sing, immediately grabbing a large part of the audience. Her country-tinged pop was perfect for those coming in from the glorious sunshine outside, and with years of live experience already, she engaged them easily. A superstar in native Sweden, based on tonight’s performance, it shouldn’t be long until she is headlining the Academy herself.

From the second he took to the stage, right until he left for the evening, two things were noticeable about Rob Thomas. Firstly, his fans ADORE him. Screams this piercing have surely never been heard in the Academy before tonight. Similarly, the sheer volume of the crowd singing to certain songs drowned out even the drummer, no matter how hard he was hitting the skins. Secondly, he puts absolutely everything he has into his performance. One second he’s up dancing and swinging his mic-stand around, the next he’s sat at piano straining his vocal chords to their upper levels, all the while maintaining an impressive level of camaraderie with the audience.

Thomas packs an amazing voice, showcased not only on his own broad back catalogue, into which he delved thoroughly, even back before MB20, but also on a wide range of covers, from Ain’t No Sunshine, to a fitting Wonderwall. Adding to the spectacle were his band. All incredibly talented, most notably the drummer, who even punished his kit during the ballads.

What was on offer here was an arena show in the relative intimacy of the Academy. An incredible performer with a world class band and a set of tunes to rival any NOW compilation. The only criticism I can possibly level at the show was that Thomas had the tendency to drag songs out to a degree. But this was probably not a bad thing for the die-hard fans in attendance. A brilliant evening of music.

Whoever wrote this give them a medal. They hit the proverbial nail on the head and smashed it through the wall. They got every detail down, from the stellar drummer, to the micro-criticism of the pace of the set list. Personally, this was the best gig I have attended. And the jazz style version of ‘Smooth’ was SUPERB.

I was there, and am a long time fan from before Matchboc twenty days, and your review is spot on!!! And the show itself was amazing, showing just what brilliant talent this guy has! I hope he comes back very soon.

I agree with your report entirely, although I would have rated it 15/10 but that's just me. I had flown in from the Canary Islands especially for this concert and was delighted to see such a fair and complimentary review of what was an unforgettable night! The atmosphere was terrific, the sound quality was great and the performance was out of this world, not only Rob Thomas who shined as always, but the band were terrific, too! I've seen Rob Thomas a few times now with MBT which costs me a small fortune in air fares but always worth it, as he is always, without exception this good, he seems to get better every time, and precisely as your review says - "he puts absolutely everything he has into his performance".

Great review, evryone on the board loves you because some of the other review have been quite critical. It truly was a great night and i agree with all the points you made, it was great to see all the MB20 fans there but i expected that. It was even better to see all the fans who came purely from his release of 'lonely no more', it must have been a real surprise for them at how good Rob really is. Thanks for the review

Stephanie
Totally agree with your review. Rob was excellent. I have seen Rob with Matchbox Twenty at the Appollo a couple of years ago, so i knew this was going to be a good concert! The academy was very hot on Monday night but with it being small it is nice and intimate and you don't feel too distant from the stage. Hope to see Rob in Manchester again soon.
