Alabama 3 at Academy 2 - 9/10

Erin MacTague (gig: 03/06/05)
The dark cult of Alabama 3 comes from the bluegrass, murky swamps of the Deep South – South London that is! The accents, the outfits and their names might disguise Brixton's ex-ravers, but their commitment to Acid-Americana is definitely authentic.

The crowd were obviously enjoying these discrepancies; dancing, shouting along, waving their sticks in the air, interacting with the band, and the band gave their all back. They chatted to the audience, thanked them for welcoming them to, bizzarely enough,Ìý 'Middles-bow-row' and putting on one the best shows of the year.

Along with the crowd-pleasing Sopranos soundtrack Woke Up This Morning and Aint Going To Goa, there were well received newer tracks from the new Outlaw album, including the single Hello I’m Jonny Cash. However, top of the bill this evening went to U Don’t Dans to Tekno, which was simply brilliant.

As always the University underestimated the scale of following for Alabama 3, and despite the gig being moved from the Academy 3 sweat box upstairs to the roomier Academy 2, it was still sold out.

It got me to thinking how come this band, bypassed by the music press for numerous popularity reasons, hilariously faking it as southern Americans, whilst making politically challenging dark music can have such a following – then I thought that those reasons are exactly the rationale behind why the band are so popular and why hundreds are packing out the room tonight to see them.
