You've just re-released Mrs Cruff. Why?
| Mr Scruff |
"There was a lot of demand for the pleasure releases, plus a lot of my younger listeners thought that my first LP was 1999鈥檚 Keep It Unreal. We have been planning the re-release for the last two or three years, and this year we found a gap in my release schedule, so the re-release does not interfere with any new releases. Plus it鈥檚 for charity." There's some fine tunes on there. What's your favourite and why?
| Mr Scruff's Chicken In A Box |
"I think Chicken In A Box, due to it鈥檚 simplicity, and the fact that it was the first track to really get me noticed. I also really like Jazz Potato." The album harks back to a time before you became Mr Scruff. Do you ever miss those days? "I associate those days with working at Kwik Save, so in that respect, not really. In other respects though, it was a time of constant discovery, something which I try and continue today." The album notes explain where you got your name, but not where you got the inspiration for your unique characters. Care to expand?
| One of Mr Scruff's cartoons |
"The cartoon characters were born in my English notebook at school when I was about 15. I drew a character called Benny The Superhuman Chicken Leg, and did a series of cartoons and the odd T-shirt." It's Keep It Unreal's 6th birthday. What does it feel like for the night to be six years old? "It is still as much fun as when I first started it. It鈥檚 true; time really does fly when you鈥檙e having fun!" | Andy Carthy on six years of Keep It Unreal |
"It is still as much fun as when I first started it. It鈥檚 true; time really does fly when you鈥檙e having fun!" Do you ever feel like passing over responsibility for the decks to someone else? "No, I am a true deck-hog in that respect! I never get tired of playing music that I love." Is tea still a better option than beer?
| Mr Scruff |
"I wouldn鈥檛 say that tea is better than beer, I enjoy tea and real ale just as much." You've played all over the world now. Where does the heart of Mr Scruff belong? "My heart is still in Manchester, though I get inspiration from wherever I am fortunate enough to travel." ______________________ And now, win something Scruffy... To celebrate everything Scruff-tastic at the moment, we鈥檝e got a Mrs Cruff CD, a beautiful signed Chicken in a Box 12" and some Scruff badges to give away to one lucky winner. All you have to do to stand a chance of getting them is send your answer the following question to manchester.online@bbc.co.uk marked 'I Want Some Chicken In A Box'. Good luck and don鈥檛 forget to read the rules below. - Question: Sea Mammal, the opening track of Mrs Cruff, was
remixed by which Mancunian record label founder? |
