Sounds From The Other City - 10/10

Ged Camera (gigs: 01/05/05)
The last time there was such a takeover of the pubs of Salford was during 2003鈥檚 In The City. This time it's a more restrained affair (only four venues) but it's just as good and the bemused looks on the faces of Salfordians just as endearing.

Land Ahoy occupy one of the several rooms at the Salford Arms and entertain the crowd with their raw rock which they assert "isn't like The Fall!鈥 With events having staggered starting times to assist the foot travellers trying to catch everything they want to, the two minute trip to the adjacent Kings Arms stumbles upon a venue packed to the rafters - a scene that will be repeated at the Black Lion and Rovers Return later.

On this occasion, it's Jack Cooper that is the focus of attention. In reality, it's more of Jack Cooper plus brass section and keyboards that have the crowd cheering.

An initial wariness, and pre-sales of 150 tickets, has been overtaken by a series of Sold Out signs being displayed as the summer sunshine has brought out the listeners in their droves. Some of them caught For Tomorrows. Now down to a three piece, the band has also mutated their music into a thoroughly enjoyable, no nonsense, mindless boogie, complete with traditional cock rock frippery.

Yena Veldt continue their musical evolution that is nothing like the set of covers they jokingly profess they will play. The 鈥榮o cramped it's impossible to get to the bar鈥 conditions almost get me on stage to join Whiskycats, but there is another brass section playing, so it's best to leave them to songs of lost love!

The promoters (High Voltage, Electric Circus, Pop Art vs Industry and Dead Digital) combined forces and realised a hugely successful occasion. Sound From the Other City 2006 anyone?
