New Rhodes at the Music Box - 8/10Alex Davies (gig: 21/04/05) Manchester’s indie heads were out to witness what could be the (forgive the expression) ‘next big thing’ on the British scene. Fresh off support slots for Razorlight, The Futureheads and Hope Of The States, Bristol exports New Rhodes. |
| With so many bands coming out of the darkness, and into the day-glo world of Smash Hits and slots on TRL, it’s a wonder why bands with such obvious talent as New Rhodes are still plying their wares in glorified garages. Thursdays show clearly showed how much the four-piece have going for them. Touted as the 'British Strokes', New Rhodes certainly do pack a tuneful punch to match their skinny tie wearing counterparts from across the pond. Tracks like She Said No, recent single You've Given Me Something, and the glorious I Wish I Was You urge to be played to the masses. Instead, the band are stuck in venues that don't showcase their sound to its full potential, and so suffer from problems with the vocals throughout the set. Sound problems aside, the talent of the four band members, the strength of their songs and the great show they put on make it seem like this will be one of those shows you look back on in a few years time and say 'yeah, I was there'. A band on the rise. | | last updated: 26/04/05 | | Have Your Say | |
darkeel this band get better and better, i'm glad i saw them early
james i agree fully - the vocals were quite buried in the mix which hindered the show a little, but they still manged to shine through
