Those from another world can easily blend in with the rest of us. Unless they don a blue sparkly thong, red stilettos, fairy wings and a witches hat? Slick, serene, suave one moment, babbling, giggling, camping the next, Rufus Wainwright is the most comfortably unrehearsed frontman I have ever seen.ÌýHe begins by announcing that he "love(s) Manchester, and that great film... 28 Days Later. God, that guy is so hot!Ìý What's his name?", mishears various shouts from the audience, and proclaims, "Yeah, I love that Aaron", before launching into the first song.Ìý Later rambles featured a dedication of his gay anthem to the late Pope John Paul, and plugs for his musical sister and father. These are the only flashes of recognisable humanness Wainwright offers. They are the hypnotist's voice, muffled in the back cortex of the brain, coaxing you up from the honey bed of golden clouds materialised by his voice. Where it comes from, I couldn't tell you. He doesn't inhale, or exert any effort. He simply opens his mouth and liberates a stream of absolute tonal perfection. Thick velvet treacle, glazing and entrancing my mind with a woozy spell that was unlike anything I have ever experienced. The spell lasted for hours, through honeyed highlights Alleluia, a cover of Across The Universe, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk, and Dinner at Eight. Every moment was exquisite. Finally, after three encores, Rufus was enrobed in white, and teleported back to his home planet, to regale his people with tales of the night he wooed the town of Aaron. Exactly. |

Tony In Rammy John, What gig were you at, Coz I was at this gig and it was quite amasing, Take the guy for what he is, A raving queer! and proud of it. I get to over 30 gigs a year and I would see this guy again tomorrow. Talented YES... acted like he owned the world... why not, that evening he may well have.
Mark, Manchester So Carol, did you enjoy it? It doesn't really come across! ;-)
John Watling I am quite old and when I first saw John Lennon puttng the willies up people in 1972 I thought I had seen it all. I went to see Rufus and he acted like he owned the world and all that had gone before! The fact that 28 days later is one of the worst films ever sums up this guy - Dr Who?
