Lemar is fabulous, he looks good, he can dance and better than all that he can sing. He wooed and wowed everyone, from the forty somethings boogieing in the front row, to their eight year old offspring. Even the blokes were singing along! This was a proper show, with a band as tight as the jeans on the woman in front of me and just the right amount of stage entertainment. He sang all his hits, did a couple of covers and chatted to his fans; which makes a change when the most you get out of many urban artistes these days is a quick set and no encore. Lemar will never be R Kelly but he's already worked with Brian McKnight and a proper shot at the R'n'B market could produce something pretty special. His songs are beautifully arranged, largely self penned and he can sing (I know I've said that already but that is the thing that hits you most). I'm an old soul girl at heart and quite a few times during the evening, I could have closed my eyes - not recommended girls - and been convinced that Lemar was from an entirely different musical time. He's an old fashioned soul singer, as he tells you in one of his songs and whether it's a ballad or a bump and grind, his voice is strong and rich. He would be phenomenal if the USA discovered him, but then the UK would be losing something and someone so uniquely British that you can't help thinking it'd be a bit of a shame. |
