The Others at Academy 3 - 6/10

Helen McGrath (06/04/05)
The Others hit the scene to much acclaim, releasing their debut, hijacking tube trains and protesting outside a museum. Their sound is an intoxicatingly catchy mix of The Libertines, Iggy Pop, the Clash and a touch of the Strokes.

A few die-hard groupies at the front began crowd surfing immediately as the band took to the stage, almost like a small festival. The Others are mates with their fans, whether singer Dominic Masters was sitting singing to the front row, or crowd surfing on top of them.

How I Nearly Lost You calmed the crowd slightly, as if they were offering support to Masters鈥 tale of nearly losing his partner to an overdose. His lyrics are often self-indulgent and melancholy, like PsychoVision, singing about his Mum being a dealer.

Masters denied rumours circulated by a tabloid about him 鈥渞efusing to travel with the band anymore鈥, playing down references to them being bothered by fame. But his talk of reaching number 26 in the charts (and that if it made top 20, Top of the Pops would show it) showed that for all their rock n roll ways, they do care about success 鈥 as in the heartfelt performance of Lackey.

The lyrics are very open, brilliant in places and repetitive in others, giving the impression that a live performance with the live energy and brilliant guitars may make the album may feel like a bit of a let-down.

Their anthem, This Is For The Poor, came with a great performance, anger pushing through the lyrics, while the assembled jumped around with echoed angst. Community 853 was lively, with Masters jumping and falling everywhere in true rock n roll style 鈥 just what the song needs really, while Stan Bowles was average, disappointing and a bit uncomfortable to listen to.听

Performing 12 tracks in about 50 minutes, they certainly got the room moving, and thinking. They are somebody who you just have to see, and those who bought tickets for this small gig went home impressed.

Mark, Manchester
This was an awesome gig, just the energy the music creates! How many frontmen can say they 'relate' to their fans like Dominic?! 10 outta 10!

Pete, London
I followed the boys up all the way from London, and I was far from impressed. In fact I wish I hadnt let all the hype in the NME fool me and think they would be worth watching.
