Gig of the year: Morrissey at Move
Gig of the year: Morrissey at Move

The Best Mancunian Gig of 2004

To explain, this is the award for the best gig within Manchester in 2004 by any band or artist.

The nominees were:

  • Kraftwerk @ the Apollo (17/03)
  • Badly Drawn Boy @ the Cornerhouse (19/06)
  • The Concretes @ Academy 3 (22/06)
  • Kings Of Convenience @ the Southern (23/06)
  • Morrissey @ Old Trafford Cricket Ground (11/07)

and the winner is...

Morrissey at Old Trafford Cricket Ground

What began as a whisper ended as a dream. The year began with the hints and the rumours of Morrissey's return. By May, the faithful were bowing down at the Arena and You Are the Quarry was being hailed as the greatest comeback of the year...

It was his headline slot at Move, though, that really cemented his reputation and his ressurection. A stone's throw from his childhood home and before his Elvis '68 comeback special name in lights, he delivered a storming set of classics and new tunes with an expected air of humility.

The "local boy made bad" took us through a history lesson of his formative years living near the ground and popped out the immense Everyday Is Like Sunday to prove his sense of humour. It was, in a word, emotional.

So 2/5 of the shortlist are local. Why no inclusion of The Earlies? I saw them twice last year, both gigs far more electric than either of The Concretes M'cr gigs, great as the Concretes are.

i cant understand why bowie has not been mentioned in the best of the gigs?when most of the papers gave great reviews of his concerts?

I fail to see how Dragonforce were overlooked. Easily the most talented of any of the nominees. And easily the best British band out there right now. Morrissey? Way to go to jump on that bandwagon.

I loved Moz at Move but there was only one place to be when Franz Ferdinand came to town:The Apollo rocked!
