Tottie

Introducing our London Calling featured act for this week, 11 April 2009.

Tottie

Things are snow-balling, says Tottie

Where are you from?

From Cornwall but I moved to London in 2001. I love the East End and live around Brick Lane.

Names of band members and instruments played?

I tend to collaborate with various artists. On the London Calling track, Genius, you can hear the mighty Lawrence Dey doing his jangly Johnny Marr guitar. Playing live, I most regularly team up with Gary Raisbeck from indie guitar band Lampwick. More recently, I've teamed up with drummer and guitarist Matt Cowley for live gigs, but I really like working with different people all the time.

Next London dates?

8 May at the Zenith Bar, Packingdon Street, N1. 8pm onwards and it's free entry. I'm mostly concentrating on writing and recording a proper body of work to perform this summer, so try to catch me here as it'll be one of my last stripped-down acoustic shows!

Tottie

Tottie's into twangy, observational indie

How long have you been making music?

I played in a not so trendy brass band in my local Cornish village when I was about seven. It wasn't fun all the time, but set me up really well. I then moved into singing and performing and got my first guitar when I was 14. Band-wise, I began in guitar outfit Grand Delinquents in 2003. The band broke up two years later and soon after I came up with the concept of Tottie, while guitarist John Willshire went on to form dark epic pop with his current band Gamages Model Train Club. Not much came to fruition until very recently though, with lots more people coming on board! Now it's just snow-balling.

Style of music and influences?

It's twangy, observational indie. Musical influences include the Smiths, the Organ, Magnetic Fields, Pulp, Neutral Milk Hotel, MGMT, the Long Blondes, theaudience, Of Montreal, Jens Lekman, Saturday Looks Good To Me.

Best moment so far?

Being asked to play Indie Tracks by Stu, the organiser. Indie Tracks is a brilliant summer festival held on a steam railway.

What song would you most like to cover?

When The Party Ends by Saturday Looks Good To Me, or In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. I like 'em wordy!

You can hear the London Calling chosen track, Genius, on Tottie's MySpace. Use the link, right.
