The majority seized were Goldfinches and Canaries and were left in "appalling conditions." The Metropolitan Police Wildlife Crime Unit raided two addresses in Greenwich and Lewisham following allegations of a man involved in trapping wild birds. The majority of the seventy birds found at the two properties were Goldfinches, others included Canaries and "mules." "Mules" are a hybrid breed, which means they originate from more than one species.
'Appalling conditions'DC David Flint of the Met's Wildlife Crime Unit said: "I was shocked at the appalling conditions in which the birds were kept." He continued: "They were in small cages stacked on top of each other in a small, enclosed space without any natural light." "The information which led to this operation was provided by the RSPCA and is a very good example of our two organisations working together in partnership against wildlife crime." "It is likely that the birds recovered today would have been sold through the cage bird market." OffenceAccording to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals there is a 'tradition of trapping songbirds, particularly finches, in the London area.' It's an offence to take a bird from the wild, a law which is governed under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Officers from the RSPCA were also there to witness the arrest of a man aged 49. He was arrested and taken to a south London police station.
