Prince Charles meets pupils

Where would you go to celebrate your 60th birthday?

He's got enough cash to spend his birthday anywhere in the world, but Prince Charles chose to visit Newham on his big day.

Prince Charles' birthday is no secret.听 There's already been stacks of coverage in the press and a special TV programme all about him.听 But Newham residents may have been surprised that he dropped into a project at Beckton as part of his celebrations, accompanied by his wife.

Schoolchildren from Winsor Primary (no-relation, his spelling is Windsor), were there to greet him.听 So too were a clutch of local dignitaries, led by Sir Robin Wales, leader of Newham Council, who was never far from the Prince's side.

The Prince of Wales is of course the driving force behind The Prince's Trust, and his visit heralded the launch of the Trust's Youth Week, which begins on Saturday.听 The aim is to tackle negative perceptions of young people and encourage them to seek help from organisations like the Prince鈥檚 Trust.

The royal couple arrived at the Stroud Pavilion in New Beckton Park and met young people from Newham College who have been taking part in a Prince鈥檚 Trust project to paint a Newham Unite The World mural inside the pavilion. They also spoke to others who have been taking part in gardening and planting projects.

The royal couple then made a short journey to the council鈥檚 Beckton Community Centre in Woolwich Manor Way where they were introduced to people from the different community groups that use the centre.听 They also took part in a discussion group with other college youngsters and mentors who have taken part in Prince鈥檚 Youth Trust projects and work placements at the centre.

As they left the centre the Duchess of Cornwall was presented with a posy and the Prince of Wales received a book of images of Newham, from two 8-year-old pupils at Winsor School.
