It's hoped that the new road in Haringey N8, named after a former Labour councillor, will help reduce congestion in the Wood Green area

A new 拢5 million pound road has been officially opened in Haringey.

Mary Neuner Road in N8, will act as a major link through the borough's regenerated area.

The road is named after the late campaigner and two-time Mayor of Haringey, who died last year aged 88.

Mary, who was a Labour councillor from 1986 to 2002, was honoured with the freedom of the borough in 2003.

It's hoped that the new road, which links Western Road and Clarendon Road, will take much of the congestion off the nearby Hornsey Park Road.

The road will also provide access to the Heartlands regeneration scheme which involves plans for up to 2,500 homes, new businesses and a new secondary school.

"Mary Neuner Road will help stem congestion by taking some of the traffic off residential roads like Hornsey Park Road."

Two relatives of Mary Neuner witnessed the opening of the 320 metre road. Her daughter Renata Campbell said: "I'm very proud to see the opening of this road in memory of my mother."

And Renata's son Michael said: "This is a great occasion and a great honour for my grandmother to have a road named after her so her name will live on."

Councillor Brian Haley, the Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation who helped Haringey's Mayor Cllr Alan Dobbie cut the ribbon said: "Mary was an inspirational figure and I am proud to have made the decision to name a road after her.

"The Mary Neuner Road will help stem congestion by taking some of the traffic off residential roads like Hornsey Park Road, once people realise it's there."

The road, which was paid for by government funding, runs through a previously vacant National Grid site.
