Child poverty "shame"

Around six in 10 children in Barking & Dagenham are facing poverty, according to new figures by the End Child Poverty Campaign, which ranks the borough as the seventh most deprived in London

The study looked at indicators such as the number of children in families where neither parent works.

It also took into account issues such as the number of low-income families in a specific area and the number of households claiming the maximum amount in working tax credits.

"Poverty blights children's lives. In the sixth richest city in the world it is shameful that this is allowed to continue"

Hilary Fisher, director of End Child Poverty

It found that the Gascoigne Ward was the worst in the borough, and the ninth poorest for children in London, with 54% of children in families where no-one worked, and 76% of children in low-income families.

Issues such as poor education, health and high crime have been identified as contributing factors to the problem of deprivation in the borough.

Hilary Fisher, director of End Child Poverty has described听 the results as听 鈥渟hameful鈥, saying "poverty blights children's lives. In the sixth richest city in the world it is shameful that this is allowed to continue."

Barking & Dagenham council says it鈥檚 already working to solve the problem of child poverty. Councillor Jeanne Alexander who is responsible for children鈥檚 services said: "Barking and Dagenham Council is actively ensuring that the number of children living in poverty is as low as possible.

"A new initiative includes teaching children's centre staff the skills to ensure each parent can access a tailored programme, which enables them to develop a pathway out of poverty.

鈥淲e are working closely with Jobcentre Plus and the voluntary sector on this...We also have a new debt management programme, which helps families to find a way out of the vicious cycle of debt."
