Body cams for cops

Police in Havering are getting new help in the fight against anti-social behaviour. They鈥檙e patrolling areas like Romford town centre with special body cameras, to try and catch revellers causing trouble.

The cameras are clipped around an officer鈥檚 ear, and also to their uniform. A small hard drive then records the officer's view and audio and will capture any drunken brawls the officer responds to.

Havering is one of five boroughs in the capital to take part in the pilot, and the council has given 拢16,000 to pay for the six cameras.

It's hoped that the presence of a camera will deter any troublemakers. It also means that officers will spend less time recording the incident as statements or in their pocket book, and will be able to get back on the streets more quickly.

Councillor Peter Gardner, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: "The police and the Council have been working hard to reduce late-night antisocial behaviour and are making real progress."

He continued: "these cameras will hopefully make Havering even safer for people who want to enjoy a night out."

And Inspector Andy Conway said: "Havering Police and the Council's Community Safety team achieved a 17 per cent drop in violent crime last year and we are committed to further reducing crime and increasing the public's confidence by ensuring those committing offences are brought to justice.

" We will continue to invest and use innovative new technologies to achieve these aims."
