The Prime Minister sends a New Year's message

Stamford Hill's Jewish Community are amongst those in receipt of Jewish New Year greetings from Gordon Brown.

Stamford Hill in Hackney is the home to Europe's largest Hasidic Jewish community.

The area is considered to be at the centre of an Orthodox Jewish and predominantly Hasidic community.

The Message

The Prime Minister has sent greetings to the Jewish community:

Dear Friend,

At this special time in the Jewish calendar, it gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to the Jewish Community in the UK.

British Jewry has a long and proud tradition, and in the year ahead I hope you continue to grow, and continue to make such a valued contribution.

This year, and every year, may all your prayers be answered and may your new year be peaceful, successful and joyful. I wish you and your families Shanah Tovah.

With best wishes,

Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP

The Jewish New Year

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year began at sundown on Monday 29th September.听 Jewish New Year is observed on the first day of the seventh month of the Hebrew calender.

The New Year is first of the High Holidays (The Ten Days of Repentance) which are days specifically set aside to focus on repentance that conclude with the holiday of Yom Kippur, which is considered by many to be the most solemn and important of the Jewish holidays.
