Hundreds of students are being taught in a brand new two-storey structure in South-east London. But, their new classrooms have a unique history - they were once shipping containers.

The 'flexible' building took just ten weeks to get ready for post-16 students to use them, and cost a relatively small amount of money to set up.

9 new classrooms

At 拢450,000 the local council say's the 'innovative' units will allow up to 100 additional students to enrol at the Shooters Hill Campus in Greenwich.

The thirty containers have been fully fitted out to make nine new classrooms, with trade workshops to help teach plumbing, brickwork and electrical installation courses.

They're made up of 90% recycled and carbon neutral material and insulated to such a high standard that the energy required to run the facility is kept low.

'Forward-thinking'

Cllr Jackie Smith says: "the new classrooms will mean even more students can benefit from the wide variety of courses and educational opportunities available.鈥�

鈥淚鈥檓 especially pleased with the environmental efficiency of the new facilities and hope to see more of this forward-thinking in future projects.鈥�

There will also be space for a new Art, Design and Photographic Gallery where students will be able to display their work.

The cabins from China and have been installed on by Urban Space Management, which is based in Tower Hamlets.
