The sounds of 1948

This month Hackney resident Nora Wendel spent her time with the young and the old from her community collecting perceptions and memories about the Olympic Games that took part in London in 1948 and also memories about the docking of the Empire Windrush. The ship that brought a number of Caribbean migrants into the country. Nora Wendel says she really wanted to capture the atmosphere of the time, she says:

"I really wanted to get a feel of the community and really tried to integrate into the community so that people listening now could really get a feel of what it was like then."

Commissioned by Hoxton Hall, Nora collected audio material for "soundscapes." Audio montages that presented memories alongside music. Some of which was produced听by The Hoxton Singers.

The pieces will be a part of an exhibition at the Shoreditch Festival and will also be available during the Hackney Heritage week. To have a listen click on the audio links below.听
