Meet the Black Hole specialist

The Royal Observatory Greenwich has appointed a new Public Astronomer. Former employee of NASA, Dr Marek Kukula is an expert in distant galaxies, black holes and quasars.

He specialises in the study of supermassive black holes and the evolution of galaxies - but, now the new Public Astronomer has a big challenge - engaging the public in the complex matters of the universe.

His appointment is all part of a continuing programme by the Museum to develop astronomy and educate visitors on all things galactic.

In his role as Public Astronomer, Marek will ensure the Museum engages with the Observatory鈥檚 one million visitors and wider public and the academic research.

"he is familiar with current trends in both education and the research community."

Dr Kevin Fewster, Royal Observatory, Greenwich

New discoveries

Marek, who took up his new post at the start of August said: 鈥榳e are currently in an extremely exciting period for astronomy, with spectacular new discoveries being made almost every day."

He continued: "I hope I can convey some of that excitement and help to explain how modern astronomy continues to change our view of the Universe and our place within it."

Dr Kukula has 15 years of science research in British universities, and two years experience of working at NASA's Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute.
