Now Upminster's famous 56 foot windmill will be spinning again. Upminster Windmill is considered to be one of the finest remaining examples of a 'Smock' windmill. It was built in 1803 by local farmer James Noakes, and used to grind wheat and make flour until 1934. But it was damaged in a storm in January 2007 when windy weather battered the building. The two sails snapped in the 75mph gusts and had to be taken down. A crane has now hoisted two new sails and a new shaft - specially made in Norway - onto the wooden windmill, making it complete once again. It took volunteers four hours to complete the job. Millwright Vincent Pargeter was commissioned to make the new sails, to replace the damaged originals he鈥檇 made in the 1970s. The new sails measure 70ft and weigh just over a tonne. Work to repair the rest of the grade II listed building, is planned over the next few months. Cllr Andrew Curtin, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities, said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 excellent to see how [the restoration]... made use of traditional guild and first class conservation advice on this very important project. Congratulations to all involved.鈥 last updated: 04/08/2008 at 22:14 SEE ALSOYou are in: London > London Local > Havering > Spare Time > Historic Havering windmill gets going again |
