Hackney launches this year's Design Awards 2008

Wanted! By 30th September, your nominations for the best building or design space in the borough

A search for the best designed buildings and spaces in Hackney is on.

The Council has launched The Hackney Design Awards in celebration of high quality design within the built environment.

The criteria for the Hackney Design Awards 2008 are:

High quality in terms of design, use of materials and construction.

Visibility

Makes a positive contribution to the surrounding area and is visible to the public.

Innovation

A clear demonstration of innovation in their responses to complex design issues, as well as exploiting opportunities where possible.

Sustainability

A clear demonstration the approach to design, construction, end-use and management has fully addressed environmental, social and economic impacts.

Nominations for buildings or designed spaces within Hackney that showcase high quality contemporary design are open from 23 July to 30 September.

Nominations

Anyone can make a nomination, including architects who have completed a scheme and residents or visitors who have spotted an outstanding building in the borough.

Three examples of outstanding design in Hackney have been recognised in the national Housing Design Awards 2008.

Adelaide Wharf at 118-120 Queensbridge Road, E2, won an award for its 147 high quality canal-side flats; Micawber Wharf at Micawber Street, N1, and Antony House at Pembury Place, E5, also featured in the awards Exhibition of Excellence.

Independent Panel

Entries听 will be short-listed and judged by an independent panel and the final award ceremony will be held in January 2009.

Jules Pipe, elected Mayor of Hackney, said: "We have some outstanding examples of good design and architecture in Hackney and I would encourage as many entries as possible for the Hackney Design Awards 2008."
