Fine for trader of illegal creams

A man selling harmful skin lightening products in Greenford has been fined hundreds of pounds.

Trading standards officers found harmful skin lightening products on the shelves on a shop called "Beauty first" on the Broadway in Greenford.

The "Beauty first" trader Liyakat Tai appeared at Acton Magistrates Court on Thursday 24 July.听 He pleaded guilty to four counts of selling illegal skin lightening creams in his听 Greenford shop. He was fined 拢500 and ordered to pay 拢863 costs.

150 dangerous skin lightening products were seized from the shop in April 2007.听The creams that include hydroquinone, a substance banned in the UK, can cause serious burns and rashes.

The creams confiscated include "Skin Light Cream", "Sivoclair lightening cream", "Peau Claire" and "Clair Liss."

Councillor Vlod Barchuk, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said:

听鈥淲e would urge anyone who buys this type of product to check the ingredients and throw away anything which contains hydroquinone.听 We will continue to carry out routine checks and inform traders in Ealing about the standards required to help ensure this doesn鈥檛 happen again.鈥
