She was 61. Cllr Kanta Patel Cllr Patel was well known across Greenwich for serving as a ward Councillor in Plumstead, recently working on Social Inclusion issues, and campaigning for equal rights. Kanta Patel was "a much liked and well respected member of the council." She served on the council for 21 years over two separate periods, previously representing residents in the old Herbert and St Alfege wards. 'Gujarati Samaj group'Speaking of her death the Council Leader Chris Roberts said: 鈥渟he cared passionately about social justice and was a real champion of the benefits that our diverse borough could bring all local residents." "She was a leading light in the Greenwich Gujarati Samaj group, offering advice on welfare rights to local Asian residents over many years." Tanzania"This work carried on in recent months through her weekly column in the national newspaper Asian Voice where, among other things, she raised awareness of benefits people may be entitled to." The public servant moved to Greenwich from her birth country Tanzania back in August 1968. She was one of ten children and leaves eight of her siblings behind.
