Captain Black

Captain Black

Nominated in this year's Indie Music Awards, part of the 2000 Trees Festival and with a new single about to hit the shops, these five 50s throwbacks are eyeing up the future...

Captain Black as you see them today have been together three years, descending from their native Hampshire to one big, happy household in Camden.

Since moving to London they say they've barely looked back to the spit and sawdust pubs of days gone by or to the exceedingly drunk and baying locals that frequented them. We don't blame the band, although with their current schedule, we doubt they've had much time for that.

So far 2008 has brought Captain Black all the good fortune they deserve, with debut single, the folk-driven track Jack Sheppard, released through indie label Bumpman Records in June. Along with securing a line up of gigs that scale the country, best bits so far, say the band, include playing Koko, The British Embassy in Berlin and Supporting The Holloways on tour.

Spreading their infectious shoestring style skiffle Nationwide, the band are currently combining live duties with the writing of their debut album. There's no release date as yet, but it's on the cards to be a 2008 must-have; check out the MySpace for sneaky samples of the latest tracks.

Their admiration of the folk 'n' roll movements see current influences spanning Kings of Leon, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, but they're not all about folk. Unable to resist the call of Dire Straights, Captain Black still fancy mixing things up a bit by covering the all time classic Walk of Life. Catch 'em now and you might just get a taste of the magic.
