Ravi Boradia, Relief Postmaster at the Stoke Newington Road post office says: "The decision about closure was discussed 25 years ago when we were told to put everything right.听 "If we had got the stamps and Royal Mail parcels side right before jumping into financial and other services we would be still surviving. "It's the fault of the people at the top who made the wrong decisions". Local feelingsLilly Philips who has been using the post office for many years say: "I'm very sorry it鈥檚 going, it's been my main stay.听 Sansha: "I'll miss the quick service" "When you're getting on in life you want to be able to get what you need instead of having to queue up for an hour at the main post office". Local resident Simon Nichols from Stoke Newington says: "I think it's a disgrace.听 A lot of people use this post office.听听 On Saturdays the queue is out the door.听 If people are forced to walk down to the other one it will be even busier. Simon Nichols: "I think it's a disgrace" Sancha who works near the Stoke Newington branch says: "It's very convenient for me, and the service is much faster than at the bigger post office, it would be a great shame if it were to close, they need to keep it open". CampaignA campaign to save seven Hackney post offices that face closure was launched by local Labour councillors. Hackney Labour party and the council were both fighting the Post Office's plans and asked residents to join them to help 'Save Our Post Offices!'. Adrian Peacock, of Gascoyne 2 Tenants and Residents Association says: " I wish to voice my dismay at the government's announcement proposing to close seven of Hackney's post offices, including the only post office on our estate in Cassland Road. "Our association represents nearly 1,000 households in one of Britain's most deprived urban areas. Hundreds of our most vulnerable tenants will now be left stranded without access to vital services should this plan go ahead". Within a mileBranches will begin to close their doors in June. The Post Office Ltd say that after the closures, 90 per cent of the population will remain within one mile of their nearest branch and 99 per cent will be within three miles. last updated: 12/05/2008 at 16:49 SEE ALSOYou are in: London > London Local > Hackney > Community Life > Seven of Hackney's post offices are to close |
