Toxic caterpillars

Beware of toxic insects!

The next time you head out to the park this summer make sure you don't fall foul of a hairy caterpillar that's likely to cause you more misery than you realise.

Last summer, the borough's Tree service spotted larvae on Oak trees in Ealing that caused some concern.

The caterpillars of Oak Processionary Moths are not considered deadly but can cause health problems. They are also likely to reappear this year. The insects produce silken nests on the trunks and branches damaging the trees as well as affecting anyone nearby. Respiratory problems are believed to be exacerbated whilst the tiny hairs blown from the nest cause rashes and eye issues.

Council Officers are working with the Forestry Commission to locate and destroy the larvae and are asking residents to report any evidence of the hairy caterpillars.

Neil Manning, Ealing Council鈥檚 Tree Service Manager, says:

鈥淲e do not want to alarm or worry anybody but it is important that people report any sightings to us so the nests and caterpillars can be dealt with safely. Residents should not deal with the problem themselves, or touch the nests or larvae.鈥

Sightings can be reported to Ealing Council鈥檚 Tree Service on听 020 8825 5000 or email trees@ealing.gov.uk
