Crime drops again in Havering

Havering is being hailed as one of the capital鈥檚 safest boroughs, as latest figures show that crime in the borough has dropped around 35% in the last 12 months.

Councillor Peter Gardner, who is cabinet member for public safety, thanked the police for their efforts:

鈥淎 lot of work has been put into reducing crime in Havering as these results prove鈥 he said.

鈥淲e've come a long way in a relatively short period of time and Havering is now, without question one of the safest boroughs in London.鈥

The figures were released in the recently published report on the borough鈥檚 Crime, Disorder and Drugs Reduction Strategy (2005-2008).

Launched in 2005, it aimed to develop schemes to cut crime, and the fear of it.

Schemes brought in include the 鈥楻espect In Romford鈥 campaign, which saw late-night taxi-marshalling, extra police patrols and a specially designated drinking zone introduced in the town centre.

Police say this led to a 28% fall in late night town centre crimes reported.

鈥淭he challenge ahead is to build upon these important achievements, and to demonstrate that residents鈥 perceptions about crime in our borough do not reflect the reality.鈥 said Cllr Gardner.

鈥淭he Havering Community Safety Partnership will continue to work with the local community to ensure crime continues to fall, so that we can all enjoy an even听 better, safer place to live, work and visit.鈥澨
