It's a mighty good idea

Almost weekly we hear of another young person losing their life in London. It鈥檚 this tragic situation, coupled with the growing level of young people getting involved in crime and drugs, which has spurred the faith community to take a stand.

Led by Croydon based group The Mighty Men of Valour (MMV), (a religious organisation set up to tackle stereotyping of black fathers) a conference of all faith groups was held.听

MMV faith group meeting

Its purpose according to Frederick Clarke, the group鈥檚 Executive Director, is to introduce and pilot several practical solutions where faith groups can help reduce crime in Croydon and the surrounding environs.

鈥淥ne of the ideas we want to pilot is, the 鈥楥ommunity Chaplaincy鈥 at Feltham young offenders鈥 institute.听 We want to touch the young people whilst they鈥檙e in prison 鈥.听and when they are released, to integrate them into a family to stop them going back into crime鈥, explains Frederick

There to extol the virtue of the programme, was Lucia do Rosario the Project Director.听 This project, [Community Chaplaincy] was the first one established solely to work with young offenders and has only been operating as a pilot for three years.

"I think these initiatives are very important to seeing change"

Frederick Clarke, Mighty Men of Valour

real impact

She said:听 鈥淪ince we started, we've worked with 58 young people and of those which we are in contact with, only 12 have re offended. ... but this is early days; we've still got a long way to go, but it really has made an impact鈥.

The Community Chaplaincy is just one of the initiatives which were put forward by the group.听 Another initiative which is currently running at Downview Prison is the 'At the Gate Project'.听

The other is a spin off of the Street Pastors initiative expected to be launched shortly [April] 鈥 School Pastors.

Whilst these initiatives are all very laudable, have the faith communities left their involvement a little too late?听 "No" argues Frederick.'

"I think it's been too little definitely but, one of the things I like about the projects mentioned tonight is that every single faith group could do it without competing with each other.听 ... I think these initiatives are very important to seeing change and I am just asking the faith groups to get together to see change鈥, says Frederick
