One of only three new Community Justice Courts in London, is now operating in Haringey.

Justice Minister Maria Eagle, who believes that community involvement is a good idea,听 says: 鈥淣obody knows more about local crime than the very people who suffer its effects and the professionals who work locally on crime prevention and related services".听

Powers of the Court

Cases dealt with by the court will include drugs and alcohol-related offences, theft, threatening behaviour, criminal damage, breach of ASBOs, kerb crawling and harassment.

The new style court which will focus on crimes committed in the Tottenham Hale, Tottenham Green, Seven Sisters and Northumberland Park wards of the borough,听will have the power to bring offenders back to court to review compliance with court orders.听

It also aims to ensure offenders understand the impact of their crimes so where possible, they will be made to pay something back to the community as part of their sentence.

Haringey was the third Community Justice Court to open in London.听 Newham was second and the first opened in Wandsworth in October 2007.
