In a bid to prevent fraud, cash machines outside banks in Muswell Hill now have yellow boxes painted on the pavement in front of them in the hope that the queuing public will give the till user some privacy.
The box is intended to operate in a similar way to a yellow traffic junction box, whereas in this case it's saying 'only one person in the box at a time'.听 Those waiting听 are expected to understand that they should still queue behind the user, but 'outside of the box'. It is hoped that that the box will help highlight the need for privacy and thus prevent pin number and distraction theft. Comfort ZoneCllr听 Nilgun Canver, Haringey Cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said听 "I hope these boxes are a reminder that nobody wants someone breathing down their neck when using cash machines". Users of cash machines are reminded that when using a cash point they should always check that the machine has not been tampered with before using it. Sgt Paul Saunders from Muswell Hill Safer Neighbourhoods Team said "The idea behind the yellow boxes is that it creates a 'comfort zone' for the machine user".听 He听 even goes as far as to say, " Don't be afraid to ask people to step back and give you some space". last updated: 19/03/2008 at 17:35 You are in: London > London Local > Haringey > Community Life > Bank Cash Machine Etiquette paves the way in Muswell Hill |
