Havering Barking & Dagenham hit by Post Office closures

It was an announcement local residents have been dreading. Now it鈥檚 been confirmed that seven post offices across Barking and Dagenham and Havering are facing closure if new proposals get the go ahead.

In Havering five post office branches at Gobions Avenue in Collier Row; Hornchurch Road, Hornchurch; Camborne Avenue, Harold Hill; Berther Road, Hornchurch; and Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, are facing closure.

In Barking & Dagenham 2 post office branches at 238 Bennetts Castle Lane and 87 Broad Street, Dagenham.

It鈥檚 part of wider proposals by Royal Mail close 169 post offices across the capital.

Conservative MP for Hornchurch James Brokenshire says the area was hit hard when five sub-post offices were closed three years ago.

He said 鈥淚t seems ludicrous to me that we should be discussing any more closures in this area given the cuts that have already been made in the last few years鈥. the post office network provides to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.听

I will fight any further planned closures in the Hornchurch area tooth and nail.鈥

There'll be 6 week consultation period during which residents can have their say.

Anita Turner is the Post Office Ltd鈥檚 Development Manager for London.

She says it鈥檚 always a difficult decision to close any post office but says they 鈥渨ant to ensure that everyone who uses, relies on or has any concern with Post Office services is both fully aware of the proposed changes and able to give views on them."

To make your view heard you can email the consultation scheme at consultation@postoffice.co.uk or call Customer Helpline: 08457 22 33 44.

The consultation is due to end on April 2, 2008.
