The Oscar-nominated actor had been filming in and around the streets of Clerkenwell on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night for the new Terry Gilliam project The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Claire Timms, a Clerkenwell resident who works at 91热爆 London,听 watched much of the night filming and took mobile phone video footage of the shoot.

She said: "The cast and crew were filming near my flat in Clerkenwell Close over three nights.

"It seemed to centre around a travelling theatre, pulled by three enormous horses, and Heath Ledger was dressed as some kind of clown or Pierrot character.

"He seemed very unstarry and mixed with the cast and crew and even helped move bits of the set around. He didn't hide away in a trailer or anything. He seemed quiet and polite.

"It's a tragic thing to happen to someone so young."

According to the Internet Movie Database The Imaginarium of Doctor Paranassus centres around a travelling theatre company which gives its audience more than they bargained for.

It is not known at this stage whether filming of the production had finished or if Ledger, 28, was on a break and had gone back to his Manhattan home.

Claire added that she thought the actor was suffering from a bad cold as he was constantly coughing, blowing his nose and had to have a hot water bottle on his chest during breaks in filming.

Police are reportedly investigating if the Australian actor - nominated for an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain - died of an overdose of prescription pills.
